Any research undertaken for improvement of existing technology in an industry, at any stage i.e. processing, production etc. requires efforts to be put in from different angles to ultimately achieve the goal. For example in an automobile industry researchers in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Electrical Engineering and Software Technology have to put in their combined wisdom to move forward.
It is with the above background the SID has started program units. Each program unit revolves around a particular area with which several other activities are associated with faculty members working in one Department or working in different Departments but directly or indirectly carrying out research related to one main area have joined hands at the Institute to form program units.
SID controls these program units and the projects executed by such units.
SID has many program units administered by it. These units are in the areas of:
- APDAP - Advanced product design and prototyping
- ABETS - Advanced Bio residue Energy Technologies Society
- CEMIT - Centre for Electronics Manufacturing and Interconnection Technology
- CRISP - Innovation in Signal Processing
- FS - (F-Cube-Finite Element Analysis)
- SuTRA - Sustainable Energy Transformation of Rural Areas
- TCS - Tata Consultancy Service
- ALTECH - Aluminium Technologies
- ITEC - Internet Technologies and Electronic Commerce
- COMNET - Communication Networking
- PET - Protocol Engineering Technology
- C3 GODS - Centre for Computation, Control, Guidance, and Optimization of Dynamical Systems
A few major companies who have financed / sponsored projects to these program units are:
- General Motors, USA
- NORTEL, USA
- NOKIA, Finland
- Microsoft, USA etc.
Besides these Government of India, Government of Karnataka, Sir Dorabji Tata Centre for Tropical Diseases (SDTC), Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL), Monsanto Research Centre (MONSANTO) and FMC Rallis India Limited (FMC) have also sponsored projects.
