The Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, one of the leading science institutes in India (and in the World), has always been interested in using its immense knowledge base to help alleviate the miseries of the less privileged in the country. Since a majority of the poor people in India lives in the villages, this was obviously the place to start the work. The project on sustainable transformation of rural areas (SuTRA) is one such project, which was started in the year 1997 and is actively supported by the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Indian Institute of Science.
SuTRA is implementing a holistic rural development package for the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, Government of Karnataka. The package aims to provide simple technological solutions for rural development. It has worked in areas like the improvement of biogas generators, biomass gasifiers, and water conservation. The group has also developed low cost technologies for vegetable and fruit preservation and for cultivation and production of high yielding varieties of medicinal plants. SuTRA has also amassed considerable experience in developing community linkages through self-help groups and is now engaged in training such groups in means to generate additional income and achieve sustainable development.
