Tata Motors , with revenues of over US$ 3.5 billion (FY 2003-04), is the flagship Company of the Tata Group. It is the worlds fifth largest medium and heavy commercial vehicle manufacturer and produces more than 150 commercial vehicle models with a range of light, medium to heavy-duty trucks, buses and tractor-trailers. The Company offers a range of special purpose vehicles and vehicles for Indias defence needs as well. Tata Motors is the second largest player in the domestic passenger car market in India. Two of its five passenger vehicle brands are among the top ten selling models in India.
Over 3 million Tata vehicles ply on Indian roads making Tata a dominant force in the Indian automobile industry. The Company has manufacturing facilities for its products located at Jamshedpur, Pune and Lucknow. A nation-wide sales, dealership, service and spare parts network supports the product range of the Company.
The Companys subsidiaries specialize in technology solutions, manufacture of machine tools and factory automation equipment, axles, transmissions and construction equipment. Tata Motors Engineering Research Centre has over 1400 scientists and engineers dedicated to product and process development, technology upgradation and new product introduction. Besides, the Company works with leading international design and styling houses.
Tata Motors has the unique distinction of giving India its first and only indigenously built passenger car - the Tata Indica and the premium feature sedan - the Tata Indigo. The Indica, launched in 1998, reached the 2, 50,000 sales mark within 52 months of launch. The Indigo Station Wagon, is the latest addition to the Tata Motors family. It combines the luxury of a sedan and the convenience of an MPV.
Tata Motors has a global presence with exports of vehicles to several countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Australia. The Companys vehicles are known for their reliability, durability, safety, comfort and value for money. The Company has exported vehicles since 1961. The B-segment passenger car Tata Indica, and the Tata Safari sports utility vehicle have made their way into the European markets in Italy, Spain, UK, Malta Portugal, etc. and the company has aggressive plans to attain a substantial presence for these vehicles in international markets.
Tata Motors has entered into an agreement with MG Rover U.K for manufacture of Tata Indicas to be sold in U.K and continental Europe under the Rover brand name.
In the Year 2004, Tata Motors completed the acquisition of Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Company, which is Korea's second largest truck maker. The acquisition will give Tata Motors a substantial presence in the Korean market in addition to synergies in manufacturing, marketing and research. In September 2004, Tata Motors listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It is the first Company in the Indian engineering sector to do so.
With the introduction of a number of new products and variants, the Company aims to substantially increase its international presence in the coming years.
